Chapter 14

The door shut behind him as Silas walked through the research room. Sebastian was clicking away on his keyboard, and Denton was rummaging through the cupboards in the kitchenette.

“Where did you run off to?” Sebastian asked without taking his eyes off his monitor.

“Out,” he simply said.

“There. Got you,” Denton said in victory.

Silas looked over to the kitchenette, finding his war buddy pouring something into two tumblers.

He walked over grinning, his mood transforming from the surly, belligerent man in the hallway to the fun-loving guy he knew in Iraq.

“I heard whispers of a bottle of 1972 Balvenie scotch leftover from the previous research party that occupied this room.” He handed Silas a tumbler of the caramel liquid. “Neat if I remember, correct?”

Silas took it and nodded. “That you are.”

“Where’s my glass?” Sebastian complained.

“Sorry, drained the bottle. I took you for a wine snob, anyway. Not a scotch connoisseur like your brother, here.”

He huffed and went back to his monitor.

Denton raised his glass. “Cheers to academic inquiry. Wherever it may lead.”

Silas held his gaze, narrowing his eyes briefly as he tried to get a read on a look of mischievousness that had overtaken his face. He allowed the end of his mouth to curl upward, then nodded and clinked his glass.

“Indeed.”

They each took a mouthful. Silas savored the heavy liquid, tasting of orange peel and oaky spice. Then he swallowed it, the long, sweet-and-spicy finish warming his belly as it hit his empty stomach.

Denton closed his eyes and sighed with pleasure. “Right. Let’s get back to it, shall we?” He sat next to Sebastian who was bringing up an image.

“What’s this?” Silas asked, taking his seat on the other side of his brother. Sebastian handed him and Denton their tablets, mirroring what he had brought up.

Denton said, “One of the things I have always found interesting since the early part I played in translating the Gospel of Judas is its depiction of the disciples and so-called historic Christian orthodoxy.”

Silas frowned. “How so?”

He pointed to an image on the monitor. “I had Sebastian bring up one of the folios. Now, this isn’t a restored rendering, but one of the intact originals. But look at what Jesus says to Judas.”

Silas looked at the manuscript page and translated:

Step away from the others and I shall tell you the mysteries of the kingdom. It is possible for you to reach it, but you will grieve a great deal. For someone else will replace you, in order that the twelve may again come to completion with their god.
